b. 1986, HK.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, James Casey is a New York based director whose short films have won awards and been shown at festivals worldwide. He has directed numerous commercials and branded films for a host of clients and agencies.

Casey’s background makes a case for the argument that “filmmaking—like literature—must have experience of life at its foundation.” He attended art school in London and after a series of menial jobs, began his professional career in the US as a designer and then art director at Condé Nast publications. He later founded the cult food and travel periodical, Swallow Magazine (“Visually Indulgent, Certifiably Insane,” said New York Magazine). Along the way, he has worked across a range of mediums: editing and publishing books with artists, developing content for brands, creating radio shows for the BBC, and writing for various publications (Vice, The New York Times, and The Atlantic).

His first narrative short, El Afilador, premiered at the prestigious 2018 Clermont-Ferrand International Film Festival in competition for the Grand Prix. His next short film, 2019's Otorongos, was produced by Werner Herzog, and shot during Herzog’s filmmaking workshop in the wilds of the Peruvian Amazon. He is currently developing his first feature, a melodrama set in the middle of Hong Kong’s disco-era nightlife scene.
