EL AFILADOR
A young woman works in a small café in downtown Mexico City. She spends her days quietly tending to the space, preparing food, listening to sentimental music, and waiting for the object of her obsessions to arrive.
Shot on location in the CDMX’s historic center, the film features non-actors in both main roles. The film premiered at the 2018 Clermont-Ferrand International Film Festival and has since played at over 50 festivals around the world. Later that year it was acquired by France’s Centre National du Cinéma, and has opened before features in 700+ art-house cinemas throughout the country.
“A sharp love story, set to the sound of the first Mexican rock'n'roll band. A good stocky little woman is busy slicing chicken with all her might. Thunk! Necks are severed clean; Crack! Like Chaplin gone mad in his studio in Modern Times, we soon understand the objective of this malign manoeuvre — Love!” — Centre National du Cinéma Francais.
